Inspiration from the earth: Spring is almost here. A time of new beginnings. In our bleak business climate though, new beginnings seem far away. Mostly we're all just hunkering down trying to get through it.

Its helpful to remember that seeds are grown in dark places. This is the best time to look at major forces shaping long range trends, see where you fit, and plant seeds to get your business blooming when the trend fully arrives. You don't have to make huge moves, but planting small seeds can reap big dividends when they take root.

Here are some major forces that are setting future trends and changing the business climate:

• Government: is playing a new major role

• Environment: our natural resources are being depleted and are limited.

• Sustainability: profits and growth must be sustainable.

• Service: a new focus on service to one another and its importance

• Connectedness: the reality of the interconnectedness of the world - people, businesses, nations, money, trade, communications. Each separate entity is also part of the whole.

Businesses that succeed will find ways to align their message to respond these forces. Review your marketing communications. How are your products and services addressing the reality of these forces? Tell your story from the viewpoint of how your business is making an impact. This will position you as relevant and timely, catching the wave as it happens, not reacting to it after the fact.
